Absolute Zero. A steam locomotive pulls a string of cars through the blazing heat of the Australian desert. One of the cars is a refrigerated cooler, and inside a trapped man keeps a grim journal, writing on the walls a detailed log of his gruesome decline as he slowly succumbs to the cold. Only much later is it discovered that the refrigeration unit hadn't been operating, yet the man dutifully manifests, and records, the specific symptoms of hypothermia as he dies. Promises Made. This exquisitely balanced documentary examines the question of whether promises made must be kept. Does protecting a 70-year-old man-made lake, which displaced 177,000 acres of trees, people, churches and untold wildlife, trump the promises made to people in a small rural town in South Carolina? The characters are absorbing, and filmmaker Susan Hogue adroitly handles classical American dramas: conflict between whites and blacks, the wealthy and the impoverished, those with political power and those without, progress and environment.
